Implant Supported Dentures
Oceanside Implant-Supported Dentures
Are you missing all of your teeth or the full arch of your upper or lower jaw? You may be a candidate for the implant-supported dentures from Thomas F. Ford, DDS
. Full mouth implants provided by our Oceanside office allow patients the utmost in comfort and aesthetic confidence.
What are they?
On the surface, retained dentures are intended to function much the same way as traditional adhesive-based dentures. They are made to fit your specific jaw and replace a full or partial portion of an arch. The prosthetic allows you to regain a full smile and balances your bite for comfort when chewing. Like many modern dentures, the teeth in these dentures can be made using types of ceramics such as porcelain and zirconium for stability and to simulate the appearance of your natural teeth.
Where implant-supported dentures differ from their traditional counterpart is the placement of implants to anchor the prosthetic.
Process of the Procedure
Like with the singular tooth implants
offered at Thomas F. Ford, DDS, patients can expect the anchoring titanium bases to be placed within the gums. However, instead of placing an abutment and crown over the base, Dr. Ford will place your specially designed denture.
Benefits of Implant Support
Whereas traditional dentures lay on top of the gums, retained dentures will regularly stimulate the jaw bone in the same way as your natural teeth. Simulating the roots of your teeth, the anchoring titanium rods that have fused to your jaw bone will prevent your jaw from deteriorating due to resorption.
This treatment also has the added benefit of additional stability to your dentures and increases your confidence in public. With the additional stability of your denture, you will be able to eat those foods that you couldn’t previously due to their ability to dislodge an adhesive denture.
Additionally, with the anchoring of implant-supported dentures, you no longer have to worry about those embarrassing moments when your denture slides out of place, making it difficult to speak or smile properly.
The right candidates for retained dentures cannot have gum disease, nor can the stability of their jaw be compromised, as these are both necessary for the proper placement and healing of the titanium anchor. Additionally, if you consume cigarettes or alcohol in excess, this may inhibit the ability of your implant to properly heal.
