What is Periodontal Disease?
Better known as gum disease, periodontal disease is an infection of gum tissue caused by the buildup of plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, on the teeth. Nearly half of all American adults have some form of periodontal disease, making it two and half times more prevalent than diabetes.
Dr. Thomas Ford has years of experience improving patients’ periodontal health through a combined approach of education, personalized treatment plans, and cutting edge technology. If you’re experiencing signs of gum disease, call to learn more about gum disease treatment in Oceanside.
Types of Periodontal Disease
Gingivitis is a mild form of periodontal disease, characterized by inflammation of the gums, along with increased sensitivity, swelling, and bleeding. Disease progression is easily treatable at this stage. Dr. Ford provides treatment and recommendations on improving daily oral hygiene habits, like brushing and flossing, which usually reduce or eliminate the presence of disease.
Periodontitis refers to an advanced form of periodontal disease that develops from untreated gingivitis. Over time, plaque can spread below the gum line, leading to harmful, hard-to-treat conditions. The spread of bacteria causes inflammation and creates gaps between the gums and the teeth, which are vulnerable to infection. The gum tissue and surrounding bone are damaged from periodontitis, eventually making teeth too loose for normal function and which may require extraction. This form of gum disease cannot be corrected by brushing and flossing, as the calcified plaque is only effectively removed with dental procedures.
Scaling and Root Planing
Dr. Ford provides scaling and root planing treatment, also known as deep cleaning, for patients experiencing early stages of periodontitis. Our Oceanside deep gum cleanings remove tartar, the hardened form of plaque, from beneath the gumline, reducing soft tissue irritation. This treatment also allows us to smooth out the surface of the teeth, making it difficult for bacteria to accumulate on the tooth again. Scaling and root planning is followed by regular examinations and cleanings, ensuring that gum disease does not reoccur.
For patients experiencing advanced periodontitis that is too progressed for treatment available at our office, Dr. Ford works with specialists to ensure patients receive quality care with predictable results.
State-of-the-Art Treatment Options
Along with traditional soft tissue treatment options, our team uses contemporary technology to provide the most benefit to our patients.
Dr. Ford uses ultrasonic devices to perform dental scaling. Traditional methods involve the use of hand-held tools to remove plaque deposits too difficult to clean with brushing and flossing. Ultrasonic scalers utilize powerful vibrations to dislodge calcified deposits from deep pockets. Treatment by ultrasonic scaling is quick and gentle enough to be performed without the use of sedation.
